EDITOR'S NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's time to RENEW your subscriptions. I have already received renewals from Frances Childs, Edwin Grossnickle, Hank Jones, Jr., Joan Loop, William H. Loop, Thelma Loxton, Mary Ellen Schroeder, Dorothy Wait, and Melba Wickes. This issue is again late. I could use as my excuse this time that I had surgery on my knee, which is true. But though I was on crutches for a week, it really didn't put me out of commission. You all know by now that I tend to procrastinate, and you seem to be willing to put up with it. Thanks. Here we are at the last issue of our fifth year of publication. How about that?! I guess we'll keep going. If we don't I'll never get the book written. In preparing for this issue I discovered that I had left out two of the immigrant ancestors, Martin and Sebastian Loop. So this month I'll do both of them. Subscription rates are $15 for one year, four issues July, October, January and April. The next volume will be Numbers 21 through 24. If you are retired on a fixed income and would find the $15 to be a hardship, you may subscribe for $5, as in the past. (c) Victor L. Bennison, 1988 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Immigrants - The Family of Martin Loop of Livingston Manor, NY Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1989] Martin LOOP [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] of Germantown, Columbia County, New York, was born in Langenbach, in the Parish of Marienberg, in 1723 and was christened on the second Sunday after Epiphany. If Epiphany was celebrated on January 6, as it is today, then he was christened on January 17, 1723. He was the son of Jacob LUPP of Langenbach by his second wife, Anna Catherina SCHMIDT. Sponsors at his christening were his uncle Martin SCHMIDT, for whom he was probably named, and Catherine BAUM. He "came for religious instruction" at his parish church in Marienberg on January 5, 1737. In this parish at that time, children received their religious instruction at age 14. He may have come to America with his brother Christian in 1739. He appears as a sponsor at the baptism in Rhinebeck, NY, of his nephew Martin COOPER, son of Martin COOPER and Anna Elizabeth (LOOP) on December 12, 1742. Martin LOOP married near 1753 to Anna Maria MINKLER, whose twin sister married his brother Sebastian LOOP. She was the daughter of Josiah MINKLER and Gertrude SNYDER, and was christened in Germantown on May 2, 1733. Martin LOOP and Maria MINKLER had seven children, five of whom survived. In 1756 Martin is listed by Robert Livingston as a rent payer. From 1767 to 1783 his rent is listed as 24 bushels of wheat, four hens, and 2 days riding. He may be the Martin Loop listed in the Albany County Militia, Eighth Regiment, along with Peter Loop, Christian Loop, and Sebastian Loop, his brothers or nephews, though he was 53 years old at the beginning of the war. In 1782 and 1784 he had wheat and corn ground at John Curry's Mill at Livingston Manor. Martin LOOP left a will dated January 14, 1786, in which he describes himself as "of the Manor of Livingston" and bequeaths the following: Son John: "... my large high Dutch Bible as is his birthright" Wife: "All effects, real and personal, while a widow." Son John and daughters Margaret and Mary: after wife's death "their marriage portion with their other sisters already married, whenever they marry." All children: all his effects after wife's death. Executors: wife, son-in-law William Harder, Jr., son-in-law Jurry J. Snyder Martin LOOP died February 3, 1786, as recorded in the family Bible. His widow Mary LOOP outlived him by almost 30 years. A map of the Town of Livingston, published in 1798, shows a residence of "W. Loop", probably meaning "Widow Loop", just off the road to Albany near the Lutheran Church. She is listed in the Livingston Manor rent records in 1805 and 1806 as Widow Loop, having life tenure on a lease of 126 acres of land and 24 acres of woods. Maria Loop died October 1, 1815 and is buried on the George Snyder farm near Ghent, lower village, "about opposite house on knoll". The children of Martin LOOP and Maria MINKLER were: 1. Jacob LOOP, b. February 9, 1753, bpt. February 18 at Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, d. November 25, 1777. 2. Gertrude LOOP, b. January 6, 1757, bpt. January 23, at Germantown, m. William HARDER, Jr., was widowed before 1834, d. January 12, 1848, probably at Ghent. She mentions one son Martin HARDER in her 1834 will, though he died in 1844, before she did. 3. Catherine LOOP, b. May 16, 1761, bpt. June 7 at Linlithgo, m. at Linlithgo, December 31, 1780, George T. SNYDER, d. about 1832. 4. Martin LOOP, b. April 21 1765, bpt. May 12 at Germantown, d. probably December 11, 1772 and buried at Clermont, NY. This is surmised from an entry in the family Bible saying "My brother Martinus died 11 Dec 1772". As this was Martin's Bible, this cannot be his brother Martin, but was probably written by the oldest son Jacob, then almost twenty. + 5. John LOOP, b. July 10, 1769, bpt. July 23 at Germantown, m. at Claverack, November 10, 1787, Margaret HAVER. + 6. Maria (Polly) LOOP, a twin, b. May 14, 1774, at Manorton, m. at Linlithgo, July 3, 1791, Jacob LOOP, her first cousin, d. before 1834. See information for Jacob (Sebastian, Jacob, Sebastian, Anthony). 7. Margaret LOOP, a twin, b. May 14, 1774, at Manorton, m. John H. RIVENBURGH. He was born March 2, 1772 and d. December 14, 1856. She d. December 18, 1840 and is buried with her husband in the Old Ghent Cemetery. John LOOP [Martin(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] was born July 10, 1769, and was baptized July 23 at Germantown. He married at Claverack, November 10, 1787, Margaret HAVER, daughter of Hendrick HAVER and Elsie COOL. She was born January 21, 1770, and was baptized at Linlithgo. During two periods, in 1788 and 1789 John LOOP's wife of Livingston Manor was the subject of frequent house calls by Doctor Wilson. These were probably periods of illness. In 1789 John and Margaret LOOP became members of the reformed church at Livingston. In 1798 John LOOP paid rent, at Livingston Manor, in the form of 52 bushels of corn. In 1803 he was assessed 5 days work on the road running "from Peter A. Decker's to the school-house". Their known children were: 1. Anna LOOP, bpt. August 25, 1788, at Germantown. 2. Catherine LOOP, b. November 18, 1791, bpt. December 1, at Linlithgo. The Immigrants - The Family of Sebastian Loop of Germantown, NY Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1989] Sebastian LOOP [Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] of Germantown, Columbia County, New York, was born in Langenbach, in the Parish of Marienberg, in 1728 and was christened on the first Sunday after Epiphany. If Epiphany was celebrated on January 6, as it is today, then he was christened on January 11, 1728. He was the son of Jacob LUPP of Langenbach by his second wife, Anna Catherina SCHMIDT. He may have come to America with his brother Christian in 1739, but at any rate he had arrived by 1750. He married near 1753 to Anna Margaret MINKLER, whose twin sister married his brother Martin LOOP. She was the daughter of Josiah MINKLER and Gertrude SNYDER, and was christened in Germantown on May 2, 1733. Sebastian LOOP and Margaret MINKLER had five children, four of whom survived. He is probably the Sebastian Loop listed in the Albany County Militia, Eighth Regiment, along with Peter Loop, Christian Loop, and Martin Loop, his brothers or nephews. We do not know when either Sebastian or his wife died. They have not been found in the 1790 census. Their children were: + 1. Josiah LOOP, b. January 1, 1754, bpt. at Germantown, m. (1) Anna DECKER, m. (2) Catherine OSTERHOUT, d. 1799. 2. Jacob LOOP, bpt. March 7, 1756, at Germantown, d. young. 3. Elizabeth LOOP, bpt. May 27, 1760, at Germantown, m. Henry KLUM, + 4. Jacob LOOP, bpt. February 6, 1763, at Linlithgo, m. July 3, 1791, Mary LOOP, his first cousin. 5. Gertrude LOOP, bpt. March 3, 1771, at Germantown, m. John SIPPERLY Josiah LOOP [Sebastian (4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] of Clermont and Red Hook, NY, was born on New Year's Day in 1754, and was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church in Germantown. He married 1st before 1782 to Anna DECKER. She was born in 1755, the daughter of Benjamin DECKER and Margaret ALTHUYSEN. Josiah LOOP and Anna DECKER lived in Clermont and all their children were baptized at the nearby Germantown Reformed Church. They appear in the 1790 census with one male child and one female child. The physician Dr. Wilson of Livingston Manor attended the family regularly at least from 1789 to 1793. He recorded in his day book on two occasions that he bled Josiah's wife and on one occasion provided "worm tea and physic" for one of Josiah's children. Dr. Wilson's records show that Josiah moved his residence from Clermont to nearby Red Hook in 1792. Josiah's wife Anna died prior to 1796. He married 2nd near October 5, 1796 in Rhinebeck to Catherine OSTERHOUT. There apparently were no children by the second marriage. After Josiah's death she remarried to a man named ELMANDORPH, and died sometime after 1819. Josiah and Catherine show up with his children in the 1800 census in Rhinebeck. There is one extra male in the household between 16 and 26. This may be a servant or perhaps a child of Catherine's by a previous marriage. Josiah LOOP left a will dated August 9, 1806 in which he describes himself as an innkeeper in the town of Rhinebeck: To wife Catherine: "all the personal property which I had from her and of which a memorandum is made and signed by her and myself." To daughter Maria: $62.50, "five years after my decease". To son John: "my house clock". Residue equally between wife Catherine, sons Jacob and John, and daughter Catherine. Catherine's portion to be held and interest paid to her until she marries, when she will receive the principle "provided she marries with the consent of her brother, or with consent of my executors." Executors: wife Catherine, Dr. William Wheeler, John Case. Signed: his Josias X Loop mark The will was probated December 14, 1806. The children of Josiah LOOP by his first wife Anna DECKER were: 1. Maria LOOP, bpt. May 26, 1782, m. Jacob S. ELMANDORF. She died after 1819 and had at least one daughter Julia who married a man named HOVER (probably HAVER). 2. Jacob LOOP, bpt. December 6, 1785, left no wife nor children, died April 11, 1819 in Red Hook. His will mentions: step mother Mrs. Catherine ELMANDORF, sister Catherine, and sister Maria ELMANDORF, wife of Jacob S. ELMANDORF. 3. Catherine LOOP, bpt. March 3, 1788, m. March 10, 1812, Philip D. SCHERMERHORN. 4. John LOOP, bpt. September 5, 1790, was still alive in 1806 when his father died. Nothing else is known. Jacob LOOP [Sebastian (4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] of Claverack, NY, was baptized February 6, 1763, at the Linlithgo Reformed Church in Livingston, NY. Sponsors at the baptism were Martin COOPER and his wife Elizabeth LOOP, Sebastian's sister. Jacob LOOP married July 3, 1791, at Linlithgo, Maria LOOP, his first cousin, the daughter of his mother's twin sister and father's brother. She herself was a twin, born May 14, 1774, at Manorton, NY. They are listed in the marriage record as both being from Livingston Manor. They had eight children, five of them baptized in Claverack. In 1834, Mary is listed in her sister Gertrude HARDER's will as Mary LOOP, wife of Jacob LOOP of Ghent, and, in 1843, in her nephew Martin HARDER's will as Aunt Polly LOOP, wife of Jacob LOOP of Kinderhook. Gertrude HARDER lists the "lawful heirs" of Mary LOOP as Mariah LOOP, Margaret BABCOCK wife of William, Jacob LOOP, Charity LOOP, and Catherine LOOP. Charity is probably a granddaughter, perhaps of deceased son Martin. Jacob died sometime between 1843 and 1850 when Mary is listed alone in the census. The children of Jacob and Mary LOOP were: 1. Mary LOOP, b. October 19, 1794, bpt. November 29 at Claverack, d. after 1834. 2. Margaret LOOP, b. December 23, 1797, bpt. February 12, 1798 at Linlithgo, d. young. 3. Catherine LOOP, bpt. July 18, 1799, at Kinderhook, d. young. 4. Jacob LOOP, b. July 9, 1801, bpt. July 26, at Claverack, d. after 1834. 5. Elizabeth LOOP, b. September 9, 1804, bpt. September 23, at Claverack, d. before 1834. 6. Margaret LOOP, b. October 22, 1806, bpt. November 9, at Claverack, m. William BABCOCK. They had a son William Harder BABCOCK born June 30, 1822, bpt. Ghent. 7. Martin LOOP, bpt. February 25, 1810, at Kinderhook, d. before 1834. 8. Catherine LOOP, b. December 29, 1811, bpt. January 26, 1812, at Claverack, d. after 1834. She is probably the Catherine LOOP who married Benjamin BARTLETT on October 25, 1834 in Ghent. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++VITAL DATA +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1. I will relay them to the person asking the question. 1. Henry H. Loop was born in New York between 1827 and 1836. He does not show up in Chautauqua County until the 1855 census of that county. There he is listed as the adopted son of Nicolas Thum and his county of birth is listed as unknown. He married Luana Marsh and lived in Chautauqua County until his death in 1911. On his death certificate his father is listed as John Loop. No mother is listed. Questions: Where was he born? Who were his parents? - Vick Bennison 2. Family info indicates father of Peter H. Loop b. 1766/7 d. 1855 Sandusky Co., OH, was Peter Loop Sr. b. 1743 Schoharie, NY, d. 1843 Woodstock, IL. Other info places Peter H. as the son of Ensign Henry Loop. Has anyone found records of a Schoharie NY Peter Loop, of a Peter Loop dying or buried at Woodstock (McHenry County) IL, or a marriage record of Ensign Henry's son Peter? My Peter Loop married Rebecca Gilbert, supposedly in 1790 at Schoharie, NY, and his tombstone has Peter Loop, JR. 1766 - 1855. - Joanne Ellis 3. I am seeking the parents of Jane Loop who married Jonathan Andrus (Andrews) of New York. Their child, Polly Andrews, born 3 APR 1791, died 17 DEC 1872 at Windsor, NY, she having married Ezra Barton on 28 NOV 1808 in Broome County, NY. Is there proof that she is the daughter of Peter Loop and Couysa Springer? - Dee Merritt 4. Who were the parents of Almond Loop, where and when were they born? Did he have any brothers and sisters? Almond was born 27 FEB 1828, in New York State, where? He was married in Bradford, Penn., to Mary Melissa Moore, 22 JAN 1850. They lived in Penn., until 1865 when they moved to Manchester, Iowa. He died 27 JUN 1912. I would like to know the parents of Mary Moore, where and when they were born. Mary was born in Jamestown, New York, 6 JAN 1836 and died 23 OCT 1901 in Iowa. - Vola Carter 5. Need maiden name, date/place of birth, date/place of death of Naomi (Barlow) Loop, wife of John L. Loop. Need date/place of birth, date/place of death of Ezra Loop, son of John L. and Naomi Loop. Ezra must have died between 1870 and 1880, probably in Richardson County, Nebraska. - Virginia L. Bachofer 6. [From the New York Biographical and Genealogical Record:] LOUP - WILSON. Yes, the Loop Scoop concerns itself with all Loop/Lupp/Leupp families. I'm going to guess that you are of the Theodore Murray Loop line? How'd I do? What information do you have on your Loop ancestors? 2. Darby Livingston listed the wife of Benjamin Loop (son of Capt. Peter Loop) as Elizabeth Camer. I always wondered where he got that information. I believe it was an error. Elizabeth Camer was the sponsor at Benjamin Loop's baptism. This doesn't rule out that he also married an Elizabeth Camer but the Camer's never appear again with the Loop's in any record of any kind that I have find. I think someone at some time misread the baptismal record, which was probably in German, and came away with the notion that Elizabeth Camer was Benjamin's wife. 3. Dorothy Wait asks if I have any photos of the tombstones of Christian Loop or his family, buried in Delaware County, Ohio. Unfortunately, no, I haven't received any such photos from anyone, and haven't managed to get there myself, yet. Someday I hope to. 4. James Fry - thanks for your long interesting letter. I had always assumed that the source of the name "Susa" or "Suka" for Martin Loop's wife was the, apparently missing, account book of Orange Spencer. Admah Irwin Loop wrote in a letter to Clara Loop Wallace: We infer from Spencer's account book that Martin Loop, with his two little boys (Charles and Peter) and his wife (Susa or Suka) was living in Otsego N.Y. ... in 1796. In 1817 ... they apparently lived in Masonville [Delaware county, near Chenango county], N.Y. Masonville was also mentioned in 1812. Verona [Oneida county] N.Y. seems to have been the place of residence in 1818. Perinton [Wayne county] N.Y. is mentioned Nov. 1822 and in June 23, 1823. In 1827 several families moved to Mina, Chautauqua Co., N.Y. Now the question is, where did Admah get the "Susa or Suka"? From the account book? Or from some other source? I wish we had that account book. I quoted more of the letter than was necessary because as I was reading over it something struck me. By 1818 these families had moved to Oneida County, to a town through which runs the Erie canal the construction of which began in 1817 in nearby Rome. In 1822 and 1823 they had moved west to Perinton, also sitting on the Erie Canal, which was completed in 1825. By 1827 they had moved away from the canal to Chautauqua County. Were they involved in the construction? I notice, however, that in 1820 Martin Jr., Charles, and Peter Loop are still censused in Chenango County. Perhaps they weren't involved in that side trip. By the way, Malchar and Susanna Van Deusen were the sponsors at the birth of Martin Loop and Catherine Van Deusen's daughter Susanna. It's possible, that they were Catherine's parents, but not too likely. They are probably a brother and sister of Catherine. Jim submitted the "Vital Data" items number 4 through 8 above. Note the 1860 census record for Charles Loop. Seems to me a good possibility that his second wife Betsey was married first to someone named PROSEN. And who is this 20 year old Albert LOOP living with Charles? Judging from the Crawford County Tax records, Charles Loop lived in Crawford County until 1881, and was probably gone by 1882. Either he died or he moved to Erie county. Has anyone ever checked Erie County death or probate records? Question: Where is Charles in the 1850 census? 5. I had the New York State Library send me copies of the page containing the military muster record for Ensign Henry Loop in the French and Indian War. Unfortunately, the original records were destroyed in a fire in 1911, and are lost forever. The 1897 State Historian's transcript of the records is all that is left. Let's hope the Historian was accurate. The transcription definitely has a column marked "Where born", and for Henry Loop it lists Fishkill as his place of birth. He is being recruited out of Hogheboom's Company of Militia. 6. In the same Historian's Report of 1897 is a 1770 list of "Persons recommended for officering a regiment of foot militia within the following district vizt - to comprehend all the inhabitants living north of the Manor of Livingston and south of an east line from the first falls on the creek which begins by Major Abraham Staats to the extent of the colony." Listed among them is Peter Loope, 1st Lieut., a resident of Claverack. He will be serving under Col. John Van Rensselaer and Lt. Col. Jeremiah Hogeboom. This is clearly Capt. Peter Loop. This is too early a date for it to be his son Peter Loop, Jr. He is also listed as an enlisted man in Capt. Johannis Hogeboom's company of 252 men in Claverack, 13 May 1767, with his brother John Loop. So I take back what I said about the uncertainty of Capt. Peter Loop's military record, though I don't yet have any record definitely placing him in service during the Revolution. 7. Mary Ellen Schroeder - please send me what you have on Hiram and Norman Loop. You ask if I have any more information on Catherine Susannah Loop or Betsy Loop. Which one's were you referring to? Vola Carter's address is Box 215, Trenton Neb. 69044. 8. Frances Childs - thank you for you kind thoughts and good luck in your historical endeavors. Frances is helping write a history of her town, Enfield, NH, and chairing a committee to start a museum there. 9. Melba Wickes - yes I would be interested in information on Cynthia Peck. And thanks for your get well wishes.
